CEDA

CEDA (Spanish Confederation for Autonomous Right-Wing Groups) was a Spanish political party formed in March 1933. It prioritised the defence of Spain's traditional institutions such as the Catholic Church and thus opposed the anti-clerical reforms of Manuel Azana's government. CEDA became the largest party in the Cortes following the November 1933 elections, but were refused the opportunity to form a government by president Niceto Alcala-Zamora due to fears that the party's leader, Jose Maria Gil Robles, may try to undermine democracy. Despite this, several CEDA ministers were allowed to enter government in 1934, sparking violent discontent on the left.
