Class consciousness is a Marxist term used to describe that stage along the course of human development in which the proletariat becomes fully aware of their exploitation at the hands of the bourgeoisie. Marxists have repeatedly argued that class consciousness is deliberately thwarted by the ability of the bourgeoisie to ‘divide and rule’ the subject class, thereby dividing the proletariat and preventing the emergence of a shared view on their exploitation.
