Sir Francis Drake
Sir Francis Drake was an English naval officer and explorer who lived in the 16th century. He is best known for his circumnavigation of the globe and his role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
Drake was born in 1540 in Devon, England. He began his career as a sailor and privateer, attacking Spanish ships and settlements in the Caribbean and the Pacific. In 1577, he was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I to lead an expedition to circumnavigate the globe. He set out with five ships and a crew of 164 men, and returned to England three years later with just one ship and a fraction of his crew. Despite the many challenges and hardships faced on the journey, Drake's expedition was a major achievement and he was hailed as a hero upon his return.
Drake played a key role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, serving as a vice admiral in the English fleet. He was responsible for organizing the defense against the Spanish invasion and was instrumental in the English victory.
Throughout his career, Drake was known for his bravery and daring, and he was considered one of the most famous seamen of his time. He died in 1596 while attempting to capture San Juan, Puerto Rico.
