Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative
The Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative was launched in 1996 to provide debt relief to the poorest and most heavily indebted countries. According to data from the World Bank, by 2020, 36 countries had received debt relief under the HIPC Initiative, with a total of $74 billion in debt service relief.
