Sometimes referred to as internment, imprisonment without trial is where an individual is held for an indeterminate period of time as they are suspected of offences that breach national security. Often used for terrorist offences, imprisonment without trial was used in Northern Ireland in the late 1970s and for those suspected of terrorist activity following the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq in the mid 2000s, where suspects were held without trial at the Guantanamo Bay facility. Imprisonment without trial is often viewed as an abuse of an individual's basic human rights.
