Jose Maria Gil-Robles
Jose Maria Gil-Robles was a leading Catholic right-wing politician during the Second Republic (1931-36). He campaigned against the anti-clerical nature of the Spanish constitution as well as the agricultural and industrial reforms introduced by Azana's government. In March 1933 he founded the Spanish Confederation for Autonomous Right-Wing Groups (CEDA) which contested and won the November 1933 elections. After the Asturias Uprising in October 1934 in which left-wing groups rallied to try and overthrow Alejandro Leroux's right-wing government through revolution, Gil-Robles became increasingly radical and began openly praising the fascist dictatorships Hitler and Mussolini, calling for Spain to adopt a 'totalitarian polity'.
