Law of Political Responsibilities (1939)
Law introduced in February 1939 that allowed Franco's government to take retrospective criminal action against anyone who had been involved with left-wing politics (either as a member of a trade union or political party) since 1934. Over 500,000 Spaniards had been found guilty of breaking the Law of Political Responsibilities by 1945. Punishments for breaking the law ranged from exile to execution.
