Arthur Lewis

Sir Arthur Lewis was a Caribbean economist who made significant contributions to the field of development economics. He was born in St. Lucia and received his education in the UK, where he later taught and conducted research. Lewis is best known for his work on the dual sector model of economic development, which explains how economies can grow and develop by moving labour and resources from the traditional sector (such as agriculture) to the modern sector (such as manufacturing). Lewis' work on economic development and his contributions to the understanding of economic growth in developing countries earned him the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1979.
