Manuel Azana was a prominent left-leaning Spanish politician in the years of the Second Republic (1931-36). He served as Spanish prime-minister between 1931-33, overseeing the introduction of the new constitution and the implementation of radical (but largely ineffective) agricultural and industrial reforms. Following the collapse of Alejandro Leroux's right-wing government in 1935, Azana managed to unite the Spanish left, forming the Popular Front - a left-wing alliance that would go on to contest and win the February 1936 Election. Azana served as president of the Second Republic during the Civil War (1936-39) but fled to France in February 1939 as the Nationalists closed in on victory. He died a year later.
