Oil spill in Mauritius will cause long term damage
16th August 2020
The spill from the Japanese owned ship that ran aground at the end of July is now thought to be very damaging; despite the size of the spill being significantly smaller than other ocean spills. The ship’s oil began leaking last week and there are major concerns with it being so close to two marine ecosystems and the Blue Bay Marine Park Reserve.
Over 1000 tonnes of oil has spilled out into the lagoon and despite the clean up operation, the oil is still spreading; mainly due to strong winds and ocean currents. The area is highly biodiversity, with 1700 species making their home there. Corals, sea grasses and mangrove habitats are all at risk.
