The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a study conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) that assesses the knowledge and skills of 15-year-old students in reading, mathematics, and science.
The study is conducted every three years and involves a representative sample of students from each participating country.
The countries that typically score the highest on PISA are generally those with well-developed education systems and high levels of investment in education.
In the most recent PISA study from 2018, the top-performing countries in reading were China (specifically, the four Chinese provinces of Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang), Singapore, Macao-China, Hong Kong-China, and Taiwan. In mathematics, the top-performing countries were China (specifically, the four Chinese provinces of Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang), Singapore, Hong Kong-China, Taiwan, and Macao-China.
In science, the top-performing countries were China (specifically, the four Chinese provinces of Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang), Singapore, Hong Kong-China, Taiwan, and Japan.
