Political Polarisation

Political polarisation refers to the growing ideological gap and rising political tensions between different political attitudes or schools of thought. It can be argued that the Spanish Civil War was the result of years of political polarisation within Spain. Whilst the left were in government between 1931-33, the right became increasingly radical with CEDA, Spain's main right-wing party, being extremely hostile to left-wing groups. Likewise, when Alejandro Lerroux's right-wing government was in charge from 1933-36, certain left-wing groups such as Largo Caballero's PSOE became increasingly radical.
