Revolt of the Northern Earls (1569)
The Revolt of the Northern Earls was an uprising in 1569 in the English northern counties of Yorkshire, Cumberland, and Northumberland. The earls of Northumberland and Westmorland, along with other nobles and gentry, rebelled against the rule of Elizabeth I of England and sought to replace her with Mary, Queen of Scots. The revolt was sparked by a number of factors, including the government's attempts to suppress Catholicism in the region and to enforce the use of the English Book of Common Prayer, as well as by the Earls' own ambition and resentment of the Queen's rule. The revolt was quickly suppressed, and the leaders of the rebellion were executed for treason.
