Torture is the deliberate infliction of painful physical or psychological acts against an individual. Torture is one form of state crime used by agents of the state (such as the military or security services) in order to obtain information that is relevant to the investigation of acts of terrorism. However, the use of torture is condemned by organisations such as Amnesty International and acts of torture are illegal under international law.
