UK Economy: Net Migration Jumps to 500,000 in the last year

Some important news today on long term migration into the UK. The year to June 2022 has seen a surge in total long-term immigration into the UK – the figure climbed above 1.1 million and net migration – the difference between the number of people entering and those leaving has climbed above 500,000 in the last year.
This is overwhelmingly down to a rise in non-EU migration and a series of special factors.
- Surge in overseas students arriving in the UK after relaxation of covid restrictions
- Special support to people from Ukraine and Hong Kong under visa support scheme
- Impact of the 2021-22 Afghan Resettlement Programme.
Net migration from the EU continues to be negative following the UK’s departure from the European Union.
