Some important news today on long term migration into the UK. The year to June 2022 has seen a surge in total long-term immigration into the UK – the figure climbed above 1.1 million and net migration – the difference between the number of people entering and those leaving has climbed above 500,000 in the last year.

UK Economy: Net Migration Jumps to 500,000 in the last year

This is overwhelmingly down to a rise in non-EU migration and a series of special factors.

  1. Surge in overseas students arriving in the UK after relaxation of covid restrictions
  2. Special support to people from Ukraine and Hong Kong under visa support scheme
  3. Impact of the 2021-22 Afghan Resettlement Programme.

Net migration from the EU continues to be negative following the UK’s departure from the European Union.
