A utopia is the vision of an ideal or much improved society normally characterised by peace, harmony, liberty, natural order and the fulfilment of important needs. Utopianism is a particular type of political analysis (for example, Marxism and anarchism) that constructs a model of an idealised future society in order to develop a critique of contemporary society. Utopias are usually designed to liberate and expand human potential in order to maximise personal fulfilment. Although utopianism is often used, as above, in a positive sense, critics deploy the term negatively to suggest unrealistic thinking and unachievable objectives.
