Philip II was King of Spain from 1556 to 1598. Before Elizabeth had become Queen, Philip had been married to Elizabeth’s sister, Mary I.
Philip was a devout Catholic, and as such much of his life was spent fighting for Catholicism against Protestantism. However, despite this when Mary I died, Philip sent a marriage proposal to Elizabeth in order to maintain his power in England.
